“CHP stands behind democracy”

In response to the warning of Democrat Party Parliamentary Group, “If CHP does not operate within the confines of the constitution, the government will take all necessary precautions required for the safety of the nation,” on August 11, 1956, CHP Parliamentary Group replied as follows on August 16, 1958: “As it is the kind of regime that prevents revolution and makes it obsolete, CHP is working towards implanting democracy with all its prerequisites.”

Immediately after these mutual threats on August 22, 1958, Cemal Gürsel, who was known for his close ties with the Democrat Party, was appointed as the Commander of the Land Forces. Gürsel spearheaded the coup of May 27, 1960.
