A change in government

A minority government formed by İsmet İnönü on December 25, 1963 and supported by independent deputies, the 28th Government of the Turkish Republic resigned when dissentive votes outnumbered affirmative votes during the budget vote at the National Assembly. President Cemal Gürsel then asked Suat Hayri Ürgüplü to form a supra-party caretaker government. Led by Suat Hayri Ürgüplü, the fourth coalition government of the Republic was created on February 20, 1965 with the participation of Justice Party (AP), Republican Villagers Nation Party (CKMP), New Turkey Party (YTP), and Nation Party (MP). Justice Party (AP) president Süleyman Demirel served as Deputy Primer Minister in the new government.

Differences in opinion within the party escalated once the Republican People’s Party (CHP) lost the elections of October 10, 1965. Although CHP had embraced the “left of the center” policy İnönü supported, the party also lost the general elections held in 1969.
