İnönü receives punishment

Created in April 1960 with a view of investigating the “destructive, illegitimate, and illegal” activities of newspapers and journals, and reporting them to the Grand National Assembly, the Investigation Council had exacerbated the conflict between DP and CHP. In the speech he delivered at the Assembly on April 18, 1960, İnönü had warned DP about the dangers of diverging from democracy and establishing a regime of oppression.

The President of CHP continued with the warnings in the ensuing days. When he once again targeted the Investigation Council in the Assembly of April 27, 1960, he was banned from participating in twelve sessions and his speech was erased from the minutes. When other 12 CHP deputies punished along with İnönü protested the decision and resisted, they were taken out of the Assembly hall by police force. İnönü’s suspension from the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, of which he had been a member since its inauguration, was not well received by the public.
