The Parliament of Hatay is dissolved

Speaker of the Parliament of Hatay Abdülgani Türkmen’s address on June 29, 1939:

Esteemed friends,

In its extraordinary meeting today, our Parliament served its most honorable duty and unanimously sanctioned the annexation of Hatay to our mother land as its inseparable part. I would like to congratulate and salute all of you with much love and respect for this rightful decision.

Friends,

The Parliament of Hatay has pledged allegiance to the motherland with utmost loyalty in all its endeavors and has acted along the wishes of National Chief İsmet İnönü.

This event constitutes an unforgettable memory of honor for us. I am thrilled to express my deepest gratitude to those who saved Hatay. I hereby dissolve the Parliament of Hatay, which has completed its historic mission.

Following the dissolution of the Parliament, the national anthem of Turkey was played, the flag of Hatay was lowered, and the Turkish flag was hoisted instead. Hence began the long-awaited celebrations. Hatay, which Mustafa Kemal Atatürk defined as “my personal issue,” was finally a part of the Republic of Turkey.
